The Physician Education Program was founded in 1998 to help develop and implement basic medical education for physicians and caregivers in rural and underserved regions. Providers of health care in these regions have limited access to educational and reference materials.

Many charitable groups visit these regions regularly, offering assistance and supplies which are greatly needed. What sets this program apart is that it is not affiliated with any particular university, institution, or religion and works directly with the governments, regional health departments, and health care providers to realize its goals. A long-term outlook is secured by training students who will become leaders and teachers, whether they eventually practice in cities or villages.

The first project took place in the Quang Nam province of central Vietnam. Over a four year period, a continuing medical education curriculum was developed and implemented at the Danang General Hospital. In addition to live sessions, written materials were made available free of charge to practitioners in the region. All fields of primary care were represented. This was our first experience in teaching the teachers. From this large scale capacity building project, we learned about areas where we could have a greater impact while utilizing local resources.

Since that time, we have more clearly defined our program areas to target learning tools for community health care providers. We plan to continue to offer three avenues of support for our colleagues in the developing world: involvement in the peer review process, online health-related learning programs and posters for health clinic walls.
